Speaker: Scott W. Campbell (retired)
Chemical, Biological, and Materials Engineering
University of South Florida
ABSTRACT:
Two of the presenter’s projects in engineering education will be highlighted in this talk – one involving the introduction of applied projects into the Engineering Calculus sequence at USF and the other describing an alternative (Modeling and Analysis of Engineering Systems) to the traditional Differential Equations course in which mathematics is taught in the context of applications. The rationale and pedagogy used in both of these projects will be described and comparisons of performance will be made between students who did applied projects and those who did not in the Calculus courses, and between those who took Differential Equations and those who took Modeling and Analysis.
SPEAKER BIO:
Scott served on the faculty of the Department of Chemical, Biological, and Materials Engineering at the University of South Florida for 36 years, retiring in 2022. He was a co-PI on an NSF STEP grant for the reform of Engineering Calculus at USF, a co-PI for a Helios-funded Middle School Residency Program for Science and Math (for which he taught the capstone course), and served on the leadership team for an NSF IUSE grant to transform STEM Education at USF. He was the recipient of an Outstanding Advising Award by USF and received numerous teaching awards at the department, college, university (Jerome Krivanek Distinguished Teaching Award) and state (TIP award) levels. The third edition of a textbook on applied differential equations that he coauthored with Carlos Smith and Ryan Toomey has just been published. Currently, he teaches Modeling and Analysis of Engineering Systems at USF as an adjunct professor.
