    Enhance Fuel Diversity in the Power Industry Using Chemical Engineering - Challenges and Opportunities


    This discussion will be a peak into chemical engineering’s role in the impending transformation of the power industry and what tools are in the tool box to fulfill the electric power needs in the near- and long-term.  The following Tampa Electric projects will be reviewed:

    • Evolution of the power industry today and substantial carbon emission reductions
    • Gasification of coal/petcoke to provide power and byproducts – Polk Power Station overview
    • Current & emerging transformational technologies (flow batteries)



    Byron Burrows received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of South Florida, is a professional engineer in Florida, and a Board Certified Environmental Engineer with specialization in air pollution control.  He has over 30 years of experience in the environmental field with particular emphasis on sustainability, air monitoring, emissions testing, and air permitting.  Mr. Burrows is currently the Manager – Air Programs in the Environmental Services department at Tampa Electric Company and he has worked at TECO Energy for over 18 years.
