Condensation Induced Water Hammer (CIWH) is a phase interaction phenomenon that occurs when hot steam directly interacts with a cold liquid, usually water. CIWH has plagued industrial processes due to its seemingly unpredictable nature which can lead to dangerous operating conditions and the damaging of equipment. This presentation will provide a brief background on CIWH, the proposed mechanism of action, and common problems with possible mitigations to these issues.
Hayden Thomas is a graduate from West Virginia University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering with Honors and has been a Jr. Process Engineer with PENN PRO Engineering for 2 years. During his time at PENN PRO Hayden has worked on multiple projects dealing with steam and water interfaces, particularly in the steam sparger application studying theoretical failure analyses.
